Mixed Martial Arts

What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts, commonly known as MMA is taught at Primal Martial Arts Academy (Legion 13 Gungahlin). It is a popular full contact combat sport that combines elements of wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and boxing. You will be taught how to combine striking and grappling so you can control opponents. Learning MMA is a great way for you to get fitter, stronger and more confident.

History of MMA

MMA is still evolving, however the concept has been around for a long time. In Ancient Greece, there was a sport called pankration, which featured a combination of grappling and striking skills similar to those found in modern MMA. Pankration was formed by a combination of the already established wrestling and boxing traditions. All strikes and holds were allowed with the exception of biting and gouging, which were banned. The fighters, called pankratiasts, fought until someone could not continue or signalled submission by raising their index finger and there were no rounds

The modern sport institutes the Unified Rules of MMA, which lists fouls, round duration and time limits.
